Last night was our regular May meeting (first Thursday), and one of our four-times-per-year club auction nights. Club members are allowed to enter up to ten lots in the auction, and there are also "Club Donation" lots of items that have been gifted to the club, and for which the proceeds are used by the club for activities, refreshments, and expenses. Long-time club member Nick from Ashland is our regular auctioneer and provides a light-hearted running commentary as well as learned perspectives on the lots as they arrive in his able hands.
Here are three highlights from last night's auctions. We had 16 attendees, and over 50 lots in total. In the pictures below, each lot has a paper tag with a short description and the minimum bid or "reserve". Here are the results and realized prices for three examples from last night:
Massive Citation album with thousands of worldwide stamps
Minimum bid $1. After a heated competition, this treasure was claimed for $15 ! Compelling collection of early Great Britain, SCV estimate $1,700.00 !
Amazingly, with a reserve of only $20, this lot had no bidders and did not sell! Three volumes of philatelic literature examining the work of the master engraver Czesław Słania, born in Poland and who engraved designs for the stamps and banknotes of more than thirty different nations:
No minimum bid, and the set sold for $4.50. Lucky buyer!
